Ford announced that Doug Field has taken over as director of advanced technology and embedded systems. He will report only to Ford CEO and President Jim Farley.
Field previously held a senior position at Tesla, helping to develop the Model 3, and most recently served as vice president of special projects at Apple. The field is believed to have overseen Apple Car's self-driving electric vehicle development program, known as Project Titan.
It is noteworthy that for Field this is a kind of return to basics. He started his career at Ford back in 1987. In his new role, Field will be responsible for a unit tasked with, inter alia, developing a proprietary self-driving traffic system. He is expected to have a say in everything from vehicle controls to corporate communications and driver assistance technologies.
It's unclear how Field's departure will affect Apple's automotive plans. Some observers believe that this is a big setback and that Apple Car may not be released in the coming years
