Apple Epic goes to court again over App Store commission dispute

The legal proceedings between Apple and Epic Games has not stopped, and both companies have recently commissioned lawyers to submit an appeal to the US Court of Appeals in an attempt to overturn the preliminary ruling made last year.

The dispute between the two sides began in 2020 because of the 30% commission on the App Store for the popular game "Fortnite" owned by Epic Games. Epic Games offered players a way to avoid Apple's in-app purchases, which Apple later deemed a violation of App Store policies and removed it.

Epic Games' claim was a way to allow third-party app stores to run or install other apps on iOS devices, and Epic Games was at a disadvantage in an early lawsuit that eventually led to the company's decision to appeal. Apple won an antitrust lawsuit but was ordered to allow developers to add links within apps to external websites that accept payments.

Designed to get courts to allow third-party app stores and other methods to get apps on iOS devices, Epic Games largely lost the lawsuit, leading it to appeal. Apple won an antitrust lawsuit but was ordered to allow developers to add links within apps to external websites that accept payments.

The appeal will begin at the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals at 6 a.m. Beijing time tomorrow.
