Baldur's Gate 3's upcoming patch will give players more influence with pesky dice

Larian Studios has announced that a new patch for Baldur's Gate 3 will arrive on July 13. Additionally, this update promises a new dice-rolling system, new role-playing systems for characters, several new game mechanics, and more. Larian announced the updated details for his latest community update video with director Swen Vincke.


Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 5 introduces a new "Active RPG System" that gives players a bit more control over the RNG skill tests their characters attempt. Instead of a skill check being pure luck and skill, players will now be able to apply spells and other bonuses to their rolls. Those abilities and modifiers will also be clearly visible in the Baldur's Gate 3 UI instead of being an invisible calculation in the background .


Furthermore, player characters will now have "Background Objectives" to complement the background they choose during character creation. These background goals will act as secret minimizations and reward a heroic character for doing something brave, while a villainous character will be rewarded for being a textbook idiot.


Baldur's Gate 3 is also updating its camping system, with the goal of encouraging more thoughtful breaks. Players will now need to make use of resources such as food and scraps to camp and initiate an extended rest, allowing players to have unique conversations with allies, trigger certain events, stat bonuses, and replenish resources. Basically, make sure you're picking up what you need for a hearty adventurer meal while you're away from home.


But if speeding back to your main camp by the river seems annoying, Baldur's Gate 3 also has a mini-camp feature. Larian Studios says that these will be "context-dependent" places that can act as temporary long-term resting places.


"From the Chapel near the devastated Beach to the Underdark, we have recreated each landmark as its own isolated location that can be accessed when you are ready to take refuge for your extended rest," Larian said. Previously, camp backgrounds were always a forest, but will now change to reflect certain locations.


Other notable updates include enemy and allied AI improvements. Larian says that the enemies will be more resourceful and will perform actions such as throwing healing elements at their own allies, or we will see an unarmed enemy picking up a weapon in the middle of the battle. Fortunately, Larian says that members of your own group will be more level-headed and will not run to their deaths during a fight.


Other updates include

  • A non-lethal attack mode, useful for when you want to disable an enemy but keep them among the living or simply practice pacifism.

  • Point-and-click and "old school" style dialog

  • New story content about "certain group member".

  • The "Jump" and "Unhook" mechanics are now separate, allowing a bit more freedom of choice during battle.

  • The option to break a character's concentration.

Larian says that the full patch notes will be available on the same day July 13, 2021, when the update is released.


This certainly won't be the last major update we see for Baldur's Gate 3. Larian said the game will definitely not be leaving early access this year, in part citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the development team.
