Citroën C3 Aircross 2021: We tested the renewed French crossover

Citroën's smallest SUV is now available in Spain with a restyling that brings improved equipment and more customization. Citroën is immersed in an era of important novelties, with the arrival of models such as the new C4 or the unpublished C5 X that have brought about an evolution in the design of the French house, while other models have received interesting updates. This is the case of the Citroën C3, which after releasing its standard version last year now brings an interesting restyling of its famous SUV version, the Citroën C3 Aircross.

A model that, in addition, is produced in Spain and that in 2021 lands as an even fresher proposal with a renewed design, more equipment, and a series of new features that we have already been able to test in the brand's most compact and affordable SUV. French. By the way, already available for orders in our country from 16,290 euros.

A more mature C3

For example, it's front looks completely renewed, especially its new grille with a curious design or its new lower headlights that now have LED technology as standard in all versions while changes are more reduced at the rear.

However, this new C3 Aircross benefits in the aesthetic part from some customization possibilities that have been multiplied with three new colors for the bodywork to reach a total of 13 that are complemented by the 4 available Color Packs (two of them with shades new) and two other colors to choose from for the roof. The rims, available in 16 or 17 inches.

The same happens in the interior that in addition to offering a total of four finishes to choose from (the standard, Urban Blue, Metropolitan Graphite, and Hype Gray) reflects a feeling of greater quality and showiness thanks to the arrival of new materials, but also to a new infotainment system now with a 9-inch screen that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

In addition to this, the French SUV also includes other technologies in the section of driving assistants, for example with signal recognition, Active Safety Brake, automatic change from low to high beam, a head-up display, and even options such as access and Hands-free start, Park Assist or Top Rear Vision rearview camera. Likewise, the C3 Aircross will also have systems to squeeze its more jacket side such as Grip Control with Hill Assist Descent to manage traction when going down terrain with complicated slopes.

A balanced mechanical range

Mechanically the engines Aircross has 1.2 Pure Tech with 110 hp associated with a six-speed manual transmission, and the 1.2 Pure Tech of 130 hp with six-speed automatic with EAT6. For its part diesel represents a 1.5 BlueHDI of 110 hp with manual six relations and a 1.5 BlueHDI of 120 hp with automatic transmission EAT6.

Driving test

Dynamically, the C3 Aircross 2021 maintains the set-up of its predecessor, with a very soft suspension that is not particularly effective at containing body roll but is unrivaled when it comes to 'swallowing' bumps and even digest the annoying bumps that invade any Spanish population. The steering follows a similar pattern: it is not very informative, it filters everything that happens under the front wheels and it is pleasant to use because it is very assisted and makes it easy to carry out any maneuver, making it clear that this SUV has a rather urban vocation.

On the other hand, it is also true that with any of the engines that make up the revised mechanical range it performs well on the road, without fanfare, but with sufficient solvency, be it the 110 and 120 horsepower BlueHDi or the 110 and 130 horsepower Puretech. There are no electrified alternatives available.

For the first test, we chose a C3 Aircross PureTech 130 horses with an automatic transmission with which we traveled almost 250 kilometers through the city, secondary roads, and highway. We travel unaccompanied and with a small suitcase as the only luggage and we do not miss more power at any time. On urban stages, this C3 Aircross is agile thanks to the turboDespite the fact that the automatic transmission is not a prodigy of speed, in fact, this variant of 130 CV needs 9.2 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h, while the Puretech of 120 CV with a manual transmission does it in 8.8 seconds. At the level of performance, therefore, there is no difference between the two gasoline variants, so the choice of the more powerful mechanics is only justified by the automatic transmission, which is somewhat slow, but very comfortable.

On the road, we do not need more power, not even when facing recoveries or maintaining speed in areas with steep slopes. The 130 hp of the three-cylinder block is enough, even to maintain high cruising speeds, although in this situation the aerodynamic noise is too noticeable, which tarnishes the ride comfort. With regard to consumption, we signed an average of 7.5 liters / 100 kilometers at a more lively pace than normal. Driving in a calmer way it is easy to go below 6 liters / 100 kilometers on the road

With its 130 hp PureTech engine and automatic transmission, the Aircross responds well and is very comfortable.
