Cupra Born: The Spanish electric sports car is now available

Last year we already had the opportunity to take a first look at its design and, although it was presented in the form of a prototype and with the name of El-Born, we were facing a vehicle that is practically identical to the model that Cupra has just shown during this day, the Born. It is the company's first 100% electric car and the same one with which it intends to expand into new markets and offer a more efficient and sustainable sales model.

Sports aesthetics

Sitting on the MEB platform of the Volkswagen Group, the Cupra Born offers an aesthetic with a marked sporty character. In its front part, the optical groups with full LED technology stand out, among which there is an inlet that channels the airflow towards the radiator and is accompanied by the brand name, as well as a bonnet with marked lines and a bumper with a large air intake framed in copper. On the side, we find aerodynamic skirts and a C-pillar with a textured surface that gives way to a very striking floating roof.

Already at the rear, the electric compact exhibits a spoiler that connects perfectly with the C-pillars, some LED lights connected to each other by a thin light strip, and a tailgate that is located at the same height as the bumper. At the bottom are the license plate, reflectors, and technical elements grouped in the same area, painted in the color of the body. The finishing touch comes with an integrated diffuser that adds a touch of sportiness, while also contributing to aerodynamic tasks. All this is completed with wheels ranging from 18 to 20 inches and a range of six colors for the body (Vapor Gray, Ice White, Geyser Silver, Rayleigh Red, Quasar Gray, and the exclusive Aurora Blue).

Regarding the interior, its minimalist style and the presence of recycled materials stand out, present in some bucket seats included as standard made from plastics extracted from the oceans (Seaqual fabric), as well as in the door panels and the upholstery that opt for the Dinamica fabric in blue or gray tones. Its sports steering wheel with satellite buttons could not be absent and the same goes for the 12-inch touch screen, as well as the different copper moldings that provide that touch of contrast so characteristic of Cupra models. We cannot forget the head-up display with augmented reality and a smaller Digital Cockpitwhich accommodates the parking brake gear shift buttons. The trunk, meanwhile, cubes 385 liters of capacity.

The Cupra Born measures 4.32 meters long by 1.80 wide and 1.53 high, with a wheelbase of 2.76 m.

Characteristics of the Cupra Born

  • Length: 4.32 meters

  • Width: 1.80 meters

  • Height: 1.54 meters

  • Wheelbase: 2.76 meters

  • Trunk: 385 liters

  • Motors: 110 kW (150 hp) or 150 kW (204 hp) synchronous electric

  • Shift: Single-Speed Automatic

  • Prices: From 38,610 euros (150 kW version)

Rear-wheel drive

Now, we have to talk about the technical part and get to know the electric motor located on the rear axle that is in charge of propulsion. This is a permanent magnet synchronous block and can reach a maximum speed of 16,000 rpm. At the moment the Born is offered with a mechanical version with 204 hp and 310 Nm of torque accompanied by a 58 kWh battery, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km / h in 7.3 seconds and offering a range of 424 km WLTP. However, Cupra also presented this model with a smaller version of 150 hp (110 kW) that will come later.

But of course, we are talking about a Cupra and there will be those who think that these figures are not entirely accurate. For this reason, the Spanish brand introduces the so-called e-Boost pack, which increases power to 231 hp and battery capacity to 77 kWh, so that the compact can reach a range close to 540 kilometers. However, it is with the 58 kWh package that it achieves its best data at 0 to 100 as it completes the maneuver in 6.6 seconds, although the range of use decreases to 420 km.

El Born is also available with another access battery whose capacity is 45 kWh. Both this and the other options can be charged to a maximum power of 125 kW so that it is possible to add an additional 100 kilometers in just 7 minutes. Cupra says that with the battery at 5%, in 35 minutes it can be replenished up to 80% of its capacity at a charge point of 100 kW. The firm will offer customers different solutions that include specific Wallbox type chargers Cupra Charger, Cupra Charger Connect (offers Wi-Fi connection), or Cupra Charger Pro (with 4G and Wi-Fi). These systems allow you to control how and when to recharge the vehicle's battery.

High dynamism

To achieve outstanding dynamic abilities, the engineers have positioned the battery between the two axles, so that the weight distribution is close to 50:50 and the center of gravity is very low. The Born uses a suspension with a McPherson scheme in the front and a multi-link in the rear, accompanied by the adaptive dampers that are part of the so-called Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) and its Range, Comfort, Individual, and Cupra driving programs. Also noteworthy is the presence of progressive steering, high-performance braking equipment, and stability control with a specific set-up. All this is rounded off with wider tires that can reach 235 millimeters.

Last but not least, it is worth highlighting the set of driving aids and safety systems that this car incorporates, these being the predictive adaptive cruise assistant (ACC), travel assistant, lateral assistant, and involuntary lane departure. , traffic sign recognition, emergency assistant, and pre-collision.

Cupra Born range and prices
