Despite major problems, refunding disgruntled players and removing the game from the PlayStation Store, Cyberpunk 2077 is a gold mine. This follows from the estimated financial results of the CD Project.
The Polish company boasted that consolidated sales revenues amounted to PLN 2.1 billion ($ 562.5 million) and net income was 1.1 billion ($ 303.5 million). The data is not audited. The official and final results will be published in the annual report on April 22, 2021.
Nevertheless, these results prove how much impact Cyberpunk 2077 had on the Project CD. For the whole of 2019, the company earned 521 million zlotys, net profit was 175 million. An interesting comparison is with the year 2015 when the Sorcerer 3: Wild Hunt was published in May / May. This year, revenues were 0.7 billion zlotys and profit 0.3 billion. However, Cyberpunk 2077 was not released until December / December 2020.
Record results were probably achieved thanks to the commercial success of Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk 2077 based on RPG. Ten days after its premiere, the game sold 13 million units - recording one of the most successful starts in the RPG genre. However, the release did not go according to plan, the title had a lot of bugs and big optimization problems on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles. This condition forced Sony to remove the Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store.
CD Project RED has committed to continue repairing Cyberpunk 2077. The Polish studio hopes that the game will sell well in the coming years. Patch 1.2 was released last month, which fixed 500 issues. Hotfix 1.21 was recently released.
Cyberpunk standalone multiplayer remains an issue. It follows from the statement of the RED Project CD that it may not happen. Instead, the developers want to focus on single-player adventures and incorporate multiplayer into their future Cyberpunk and Sorcerer games.
Reuters quoted the general director of the CD Project. I don't see a chance to put Cyberpunk 2077 on the shelf. I am convinced that we can bring the game to a state we will be proud of and successfully sell it for years to come.
Adam Kiciński at the end of last month said, we previously indicated that our next AAA project would be multiplayer Cyberpunk. Due to our new, more systematic, and agile approach, we have decided to reconsider this plan. We do not focus primarily on one great online experience or game but on the online experience in all our brands in the future.
