Elon Musk Announces New User Fee for X to Combat Bots

Last year, reports surfaced about Elon Musk's plan to implement a new fee for freshly registered users on X (previously known as Twitter). The goal? To rid the platform of bots. Now, Musk has confirmed these plans and provided further details about the potential fee.

In a recent X post, Musk informed users that a "small fee" for new accounts to post on the platform is the "only viable solution to the relentless onslaught of bots." He further argued that AI tools can easily bypass "you're a robot" tests.

In another post, the X owner stated that users who opt not to pay the fee will still have the ability to follow other accounts and read posts at no cost.

Users who don't pay to unlock the posting option will receive it free of charge after a three-month period. Code discovered in the X app confirms this change:

"Subscribe to unlock the ability to post and engage. New unverified users are required to pay a small annual fee before you're able to perform any write actions on the web, including posting, liking, bookmarking, and replying. This is to reduce bots and spam to make the experience better for everyone. You can still follow accounts and browse X for free", the message reads.

As of now, there's no information on when this system will be implemented or the cost of the fee. A previous rumor suggested that X intended to charge non-verified users $1 per year.

Since Musk's acquisition of Twitter, he has consistently stated his intention to eliminate bots and spam accounts. This was one of the reasons for allowing users to pay $8 a month for a blue verified badge. However, this strategy hasn't been effective in eradicating bots – in fact, numerous bots pay for the verified badge and impersonate others.

The effectiveness of a new fee in preventing bot accounts and spam on the platform remains unclear.
