Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, has partnered with Canadian startup Geometric Energy Corp to help launch a satellite that will serve as the first advertising billboard in space.
The satellite will be sent into low-earth orbit next year aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. This satellite will be able to display advertisements that will be sent from Earth. The satellite, called CubeSat, will have a pixelated screen of as yet unknown resolution. Geometric Energy Corp, a startup that SpaceX is working with, added that in addition to ads, the screen can also be used to display logos and even artwork.
Samuel Reid, CEO, and co-founder of Geometric Energy Corp clarified in an interview with BusinessInsider that this space billboard will not be visible from Earth. The content on the satellite display will be broadcast live to various online platforms such as YouTube or Twitch using a camera.
Companies may want to place their logo, someone may want to leave some kind of lyrical or artistic message. We want to democratize access to space and ensure decentralized participation. Hopefully, people don't want to waste their money on something inappropriate or offensive.
