Facebook has announced the launch of end-to-end (E2E) encryption for voice and video calls on Facebook Messenger.
Facebook Messenger got end-to-end encryption of text messages in 2016 when Facebook added a "secret conversation" feature to its app. Now, this mode additionally began to support one-on-one calls. Facebook noted that the feature was added as interest in voice and video calls grew - Messenger currently has over 150 million video calls per day.
Wider settings have also been added for disappearing messages on Facebook Messenger.
In addition, Facebook has begun limited testing of a number of other features. For example, some users will see an option with end-to-end encryption for group chats and calls. Testing of end-to-end encrypted private messages on Instagram will begin in the coming weeks.
