Instagram has changed dramatically in recent years as the social network was dedicated only to sharing photos before Facebook acquired it in 2012 for one billion US dollars. The platform acquired a large number of features and characteristics and turned into an integrated social networking platform with the features of communication between users, and the use of the browser version more effectively.
In addition to all of the above, the features of search and exploration on Instagram have greatly improved, as the platform will be more intelligent in communicating what the user is actually looking for, as explained by Instagram Director, Adam Mousseri, in a recent post.
The latest update to Instagram search is concerned with getting the user what they are actually looking for while protecting them from any fake or inappropriate content. When searching for a word on the platform, the first thing that will happen is to rearrange the search results based on their relationship to the same user. The platform relies on a large amount of data it possesses about its users to improve this feature.
Mosseri talked about some of the factors that go into the order of search results, and the first and most important factor, of course, is the text that is written in the search box. Once the user starts typing, Instagram will start matching the typed text with different search results including usernames, places, text within posts on the platform, and more.
The platform depends on other factors such as the user’s activity on the platform, meaning that the search results may differ based on the accounts the user follows, the photos he viewed, the type of content he likes, and more.
New updates to search features take other things into account, such as the popularity of the content being searched. So if the user searches for a famous name, whether it is for a user, a football club, or a TV show, the platform will get him what he wants faster.
Instagram is introducing a smart feature within its search engine updates, as it will prevent accounts that post misleading or random content from appearing when searching for them. In order for the user to access these accounts, he will have to type the username in full and correctly. But if he misses a letter or a sign, he will not reach him.
Instagram tries to moderate its search results for sensitive topics and content that it thinks is harmful to some users, while relying on more accurate measurements of how harmful these types of content are.
In general, the platform removes accounts, posts, and hashtags that is, hashtags that violate its laws of use.
