Massive outages of Exchange Online and Microsoft Teams in the Asia-Pacific region

A number of Microsoft's flagship cloud productivity services failed yesterday throughout the Asia-Pacific region. Our preliminary findings indicate that the performance of our service infrastructure is constrained at a sub-optimal, resulting in normal service functions not being used normally.

The message said Exchange Online user customers may not be able to access the service, send email and/or files, or use what Microsoft describes as general functionality. The implications for Teams users include:

  • There may be issues with users scheduling/editing meetings and live meetings.

  • People Picker/Search functionality may not work as expected.

  • Users may not be able to search Microsoft Teams.

  • Users may be unable to load the Tasks tab in Microsoft Teams.

  • Messaging, chat, channels, and other core Teams services still appear to be available.

Microsoft said,

It is not clear what caused the above problems.

Seventeen minutes after the first outage status update, a second update read,

While we continue to analyze relevant diagnostic data, we are attempting to restart a subset of the affected infrastructure and observe that restarts mitigate this problem.

At 3:14 pm International Standard Time, it was pointed out that the incident now also affects SharePoint Online, Microsoft PowerApps, and Microsoft PowerAutomate.
