Microsoft Releases Edge Browser 111.0.1661.54 Stable Version Update

Microsoft Edge, one of the most popular web browsers globally, released its latest stable version update today. This update, version 111.0.1661.54, brings a host of new features and security fixes. One of the most significant improvements in this update is the ability for IT administrators to disable the Discover app in the sidebar.

Improved Microsoft Edge Sidebar

The Edge sidebar is a productivity tool that allows users to access useful information and applications side-by-side in the browser window. This update continues to improve the sidebar's functionality, making it more efficient and user-friendly.

IT administrators can now disable the Discover application, which is a feature that shows news and other content in the sidebar. Users can also hide their sidebar when not in use by adjusting the settings in the sidebar's options (edge://settings/sidebar).

Enterprise users can also customize the sidebar by choosing to "always show" or "autohide" when it's enabled by the administrator. Future versions of Microsoft Edge will offer more options for customizing the sidebar toolbar buttons.

Security Fixes

This stable version update also addresses two security vulnerabilities that Microsoft identified:

  • CVE-2023-28286 (Class: Moderate Risk) - This vulnerability relates to how Microsoft Edge handles user input, and it could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code on the user's device.

  • CVE-2023-28261 (Class: Low Risk) - This vulnerability relates to how Microsoft Edge handles user data, and it could allow an attacker to view sensitive information.

Microsoft highly recommends that all users update their browsers to the latest version as soon as possible to ensure that their devices are protected from these security vulnerabilities.
