The Model S Plaid + will surpass the EQS in the range

Mercedes has introduced its electric flagship EQS. The luxury electric car is the first since the established car manufacturer to be able to surpass most models of the American Tesla in the monitored range. An exception is the top Model S in the Plaid + version, but it will not reach its first customers until the end of the year, later than EQS.

In the case of the EQS 450+ version with rear-wheel drive and an output of 245 kilowatts, the German carmaker promises a range of up to 770 kilometers on a single charge. At the same time, the S Long Range model can handle only 663. At the same time, the established car manufacturers have so far lagged behind in this, largely psychologically important, parameter.

EQS owes its parameters to top aerodynamics when engineers managed to achieve an air resistance coefficient of 0.20, the efficiency of the propulsion system, and also a large battery. The EQS record range applies to the version with a larger battery with a usable capacity of 107.8 kilowatt-hours, there will also be a variant with a smaller 90 kWh.

However, a long-range would not be anything without a fast charge and here Mercedes loses at first glance, compared to 250 kW at Tesla, it will offer only 200 kW fast charging. However, according to the head of the EQ division, which includes electric cars with a three-pointed star, Christoph Starzynski, the company focused on making high performance available at a suitable station for a long time, not just for a short time.

Eighty percent of this huge battery charges quickly in just over half an hour.

Starzynski said, it's more important for customers to charge while charging, not peak performance.

The EQS will also support authorization and start charging by simply connecting to the charger.

The high-capacity battery with ingenious cooling proves that the EQS was created as an electric car, for which compromises were not taken into account too much. Mercedes was the first to build it on the modular MMA platform, which is designed specifically for electric cars, and for the first time in Stuttgart, they built an electric car from scratch, did not modify the corresponding combustion model, as in the case of EQC (based on GLC) and EQA (based on GLA).

The specific platform made it possible to build a sedan with air suspension, which is approximately as tall as the conventional S-Class and has comparable ground clearance, it would not be possible in a modified conventional esk.

Nevertheless, the EQS is the electrical equivalent of class S with 5.2 meters in length. However, it is also a very unconventional equivalent. In his case, the designers decided to take the luxury of automobiles completely differently. The side profile forms a single arch, the more than three-compartment sedan resembles an EQS flat single-compartment MPV. Instead of a long bonnet as a traditional symbol of automotive luxury, the car shows off its spacious interior.

In it, the crew encounters an additional glass dashboard, under which three displays are hidden, they replace the alarm clocks, the radio/navigation screen, and the passenger has its own panel. The controls are purely tactile, but artificial intelligence has to estimate according to the situation what the driver would like to do and offer him a suitable function. No need to get bogged down in the menu.

There will also be successful and improved natural voice control. The function can be updated and purchased using the built-in store. Additionally, pay extra for a larger range of rear wheels.

As Mercedes took care of the air resistance, which also affects the aerodynamic noise, they decided to literally cut the cabin off from what was happening around. Even between the battery and the crew compartment, there is a special foam to absorb the vibrations of the battery. The HEPA cabin filter is as large as A2 paper and will not let in most viruses, bacteria, dust particles, or odors.

At EQS, Mercedes has also decided to reconsider the role of the driver, which some owners of the classic S-Class employ. Electrically operated doors will be available at an additional cost. These open for the driver when the driver approaches with the key in his pocket. Others will then open using the touch screen. Mercedes promises that with EQS you just come to kindergarten, push a virtual button and say, Kids, get out, I'll pick you up at four.

The door has sensors to prevent it from opening into obstacles and cooperates with assistance systems. They do not open in the way of a passing car. In addition, the manufacturer suffocates that the technology has been tested to last.

Of course, opening the door is only one of the duties of a professional driver. What about management? It will be possible to leave this on the car itself in the EQS on the German motorway from the middle of next year. With an additional sensor package (lidar…), in such cases, it will be able to drive in a column without the driver's supervision, similar to combustion class S EQS.

The car itself should move through selected garages. As soon as the regulations allow, the driver will get out at the entrance to the building, the car will wait for him, and then pick him up.

EQS will arrive on the Czech market in August, it will be possible to order it from June. At first, there will be two power versions on offer: the EQS 450+ with an output of 245 kilowatts and the EQS 580 4Matic with two electric motors, all-wheel drive, and an output of 385 kW. Later, the EQS will be the first purely electric AMG, with an output of up to 560 kilowatts.
