The new Peugeot 308 will fit into half a million crowns

The third generation of the Peugeot 308 is one of the cars you just can't miss on the road. The French bet on a distinctive design corresponding to the new 208 or 508. Now a competitor of Golf or Octavia knows its Czech prices, although it will not start selling until January next year. They start at 465 thousand crowns with relatively rich equipment. However, if you want a plug-in hybrid, you can get over a million.

The second generation of the Peugeot 308 lasted on the market for eight years, but in competition with the new generations of the Golf, Octavia, or Toyota Corolla, it gradually began to lose its breath. The new edition, which has already received Czech awards, but the first cars will not actually arrive until January next year, but it returns to compact models with a lion in the emblem. And not only figuratively, but also literally - the 308 will be the first Peugeot to receive a new, more distinctive logo. This is in line with the innovative and unmistakable body and interior design.

The basis of 308 is a redesigned version of the modular platform EMP2, with which the car is stretched to 4367 mm and has 2675 mm between the axles. In both cases, it is more than its predecessor, while the five-door hatchback also expanded and fell. A station wagon with the traditional SW designation will also come to the market, you just need to wait a while for it (even though Peugeot has already introduced it).

The case can hold 412 or 361 liters, depending on which drive you have in your bowels. In order to reduce emissions and consumption, the French decided to come up with two plug-in hybrid versions in addition to two petrol and one diesel unit. The weaker has a total of 133 and the stronger 165 kW, in both cases the front wheels turn an eight-speed automatic. The battery has a capacity of 12.4 kWh and allows you to drive in the combined mode of 60 or 59 km only on electricity. Consumption is in both cases at the level of 1.1 and 1.2 l / 100 km, respectively.

However, the basis of the offer is an 81kW three-cylinder 1.2 PureTech with supercharging and a manual six-speed transmission. There is also a more powerful version with 96 kW, but where the customer can pay 55 thousand for an eight-speed machine. The same money costs the automatic system in a single turbo diesel 1.5 BlueHDi with an output of 96 kW. He also has a standard six-speed manual transmission.

Peugeot 308 Allure & Allure Pack - from 545 thousand crowns

Because the Czech importer provides a special discount on the car from the very beginning, the amount of which varies according to the engine and equipment, the basic variant of Peugeot costs 465 thousand crowns. The Active Pack equipment then binds all the engines together, except for the strongest plug-in hybrid, which means that you connect even the lowest equipment of the compact model to the socket. By the way, you will pay at least 770 thousand crowns for the weaker of the plug-in hybrids.

And what does the Active Pack equipment contain? Safety aids include lane departure warning, emergency braking, and speed sign recognition. Comfort equipment includes automatic dual-zone air conditioning, radio with a ten-inch screen and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, multifunction leather steering wheel, ten-inch alarm clock screen, cruise control, push-button start, automatic wipers, rear parking sensors, or front and rear LED lights. Depending on the engine, the wheels are 16 or 17 inches, along with the weakest engine, they are steel rims, otherwise, they are aluminum.

Also for the above Allure and Allure Pack equipment, the importer continues to provide a price advantage depending on the selected engine. The selection is wide again, only the 81kW three-cylinder has dropped out, and again it doesn't even have a 165kW plug-in hybrid. With 96 kW, the 308 Allure starts at the action of 545 thousand crowns and the Allure Pack at 570 thousand crowns.

Let's start with the Allure equipment. In addition to the base, it offers, for example, front parking sensors and reversing camera, integrated 3D online navigation, i-Toggles touch buttons for quick control of some multimedia system functions, USB charging for rear seats, better front seats, automatic high beam switching, stylized diodes daytime running lights or 17-inch alloy wheels for all engines.

The Allure Pack also adds advanced reading of several different traffic signs, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, tracking behind the vehicle when reversing, keyless unlocking, wireless charging of smartphones, or other alloy wheel designs.

Peugeot 308 GT & GT Pack - from 710 thousand crowns

You can't buy the two highest GT and GT Pack equipment, which are also visually tuned to the sports hall, without a slot machine. This means that the base for 710 thousand for the GT version and 770 thousand for the GT Pack version, respectively, is provided by a twelve-plate engine with 96 kW and an eight-speed automatic. For the first time, a top plug-in hybrid with 165 kW is available in both of these equipment, while the weaker version can only be purchased as a GT.

In addition, the 308 GT mainly has front diode Matrix lights and rear LED lamps with 3D optics. It also features digital 3D alarm clocks, a heated steering wheel, seats partially upholstered in Alcantara, specific exterior design elements, 18-inch alloy wheels, sportier transmission settings, power steering, and accelerator pedal, and digitally tinted sound from the petrol engine or plug-in hybrids.

The GT Pack then adds all the above to keep the vehicle in the lane, a panoramic camera system, electric adjustment of the driver's seat with a medical certificate, heated front seats with massage function, Focal audio with nine speakers, and a 12-channel amplifier or a different alloy wheel design.

Competitor number 1: Škoda Octavia - from CZK 494,900

On the Czech market, the Peugeot 308 bestseller in Mladá Boleslav will certainly not surpass the store, but even so, the Škoda Octavia is one of its challengers. And this is despite the fact that it is not a classic hatchback, but a more spacious compact liftback. But a standard is simply a standard, and everyone is compared to it. Above the French, Škoda has the upper hand on the size, the volume of the trunk, and the offer of motorizations. It has more than one, including the gas version of the G-Tec or E-Tec mild hybrids in conjunction with the 1.0 TSI and 1.5 TSI engines with DSG. Both cars can also compete with the plug-in hybrid drive, but the Octavia is always a bit thicker than the 308 in a weaker and stronger variant.

Although different in size, both models are price balanced. And if Peugeot did not offer a special discount of 30,000 on the basic version, both cars would cost a hundred crowns from exactly the same amount. That's why we compared the basic versions of both models, which have an identically powerful supercharged three-cylinder under the hood in conjunction with a six-speed manual transmission. Just everyone goes for it from a different volume - Peugeot 1.2 liter and Skoda 1.0 liter.

Before you start with the table, we will take a brief look at other prices. For example, the plug-in hybrid Octavia iV starts at 834,900 crowns, while the Peugeot 308 Hybrid starts at 770,000 crowns. The equipment is quite similar. It is also interesting that even the most expensive plug-in hybrid Octavia RS does not cost over a million (949,900 crowns), if we do not count the action limited edition of 120 years of motorsport. The strongest 308 GT Pack into the drawer costs 1.02 million crowns.

The basic equipment of the Peugeot 308 is richer in content than the Octavia, where, for example, for automatic wipers, digital alarm clocks, or a multifunctional leather steering wheel, it would be enough to choose the second Ambition equipment for at least 559,900 crowns. It has all the listed elements and also has a two-zone automatic air conditioning. But equipment at the level of basic 308 will suddenly send the price up to a difference of almost one hundred thousand crowns.

Competitor number 2: Volkswagen Golf - from 561,900 CZK

The second competitor of the new 308 also belongs to the standards of the compact segment. Unlike the Octavia, the Volkswagen Golf is a classic five-door hatchback like the French model, and Peugeot is outgrowing its German rival in virtually every way - especially in length, wheelbase, and trunk volume. However, Volkswagen has a wider range of engines, based primarily on the existence of sports variants GTI and R. The latter even with all-wheel drive, the 308 does not have in any of the available variants. It is the same with the mild-hybrid, which is combined with the 1.5 TSI engine in combination with the DSG.

Although the Golf has several engines of different performance, it is also more expensive. Basically, with equally strong three-cylinder engines even by almost 100 thousand crowns, which would be slightly changed by the fact that the 308 deducts a relatively significant discount from the standard price. But the difference would still be high. As with the Octavia, we, therefore, compared the basic 308 and the basic Golf.

The higher price difference continues even further, for example, the cheapest plug-in hybrid will come to the bowels of Golf for 899,900 crowns, although the German rival also has better equipment than the basic plug-in hybrid Peugeot. However, it will be similarly expensive as the cheapest Golf PHEV even in the almost top version of the GT (905 thousand crowns), which has richer equipment than the basic Golf in the drawer. As we have already mentioned, the advantages of VW are the sports versions - especially GTD, GTI, GTI Clubsport and R. Peugeot has no answer.

Golf is more expensive than 308, but also better equipped. It already has front parking sensors, a heated steering wheel, and front seats or adaptive cruise control. On the other hand, the price of the basic Golf will still include the 308 in a higher version of the Allure with a more powerful 96kW engine and equipment including, for example, navigation or front parking sensors. However, the heated front seats or steering wheel have up to the highest equipment levels as standard.

Competitor number 3: Kia Ceed - from 394 980 CZK

At the end of the holidays, Kia Ceed entered the market in a modernized variant. It received a modified external design, more assistance systems, and prices higher by 10 to 30 thousand crowns, depending on equipment and engine. The basic model with a 74kW liter three-cylinder now costs 394,980 crowns, 20,000 more than before the modernization. As with the 308, the price is after the special discount, so overall the basic version of the Korean hatchback is 70,000 cheaper than the French model. But it has worse equipment and a weaker engine, it needs to be delivered.

Peugeot is larger than Kia, also has a larger luggage compartment, and offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain. It has Ceed only as a combi SW, or crossover Xceed. For a change, Kia has a wider portfolio of petrol engines and its only turbodiesel is a mild hybrid as standard.

The lower price is an advantage especially for the less equipped versions, but if we compare the Ceed and 308 are similarly equipped variants with ideally similarly powerful engines, then the differences will not be so significant. After all, that's why we compared the basic 308 with the 88kW Ceed, but only in the third Exclusive equipment. Such a version costs at least 469,980 crowns and is even a thousand more expensive than Peugeot. With a weaker 74kW engine, Ceed Exclusive costs 449,980 crowns.
