The shared motorcycle industry will reduce carbon emissions by at least 1 million tons per year

Recently, the Environmental Development Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment released the "Report on Pollution and Carbon Reduction in the Whole Life Cycle of Shared Riding" (hereinafter referred to as the report), which is the first time from the perspective of the whole life cycle of vehicle production, use, and environmental protection. In the whole process of recycling, we measure the pollution and carbon reduction effects of shared bicycles and motorcycles.

The report shows that through the whole life cycle management initiative, the carbon footprints of a Meituan motorcycle and a bicycle have been reduced by 114 kg and 84 kg, respectively.

In comparison, the carbon reduction effect of shared motorcycles is more significant. A Meituan motorcycle reduces carbon emissions by nearly 1 ton in the entire cycle. After offsetting the carbon emissions generated during the same period, the net carbon reduction in the entire life cycle is 558 kg. The net carbon reduction in the entire life cycle of a single Meituan bicycle is 214 kg.

According to the data, the total investment in the shared motorcycle industry in 2021 will be 8 million vehicles . Based on the 4-year life cycle of each vehicle, the entire industry can further reduce carbon emissions by more than 1 million tons per year after neutralizing its own carbon emissions. If only operating carbon emission reductions are calculated, the actual carbon reduction effect of shared motorcycles far exceeds this figure. The "Low-Carbon Shared Motorcycle Report" shows that the entire industry of shared motorcycles can reduce carbon by 1.636 million tons per year.
