This demo of Unreal with a human face is so realistic that it scares

During last week's Game Developers Conference, members of Gears of War developer The Coalition presented a technical demo of “Alpha Point” showing the environments and possible effects in Unreal Engine 5. More importantly, the team released a character rendering test, proving that the future is closer than ever to reality.

It is truly amazing how the already realistic alien rock formations are made even more realistic by using the trailers made in Unreal Engine 5. The scene from the video below, created with an early access version of the new game engine running on An Xbox Series X, is nothing short of astonishing, with its lighting and reflections in real-time, all while pushing over a hundred million triangles.

All in all, I'm most impressed with the following character interpretation test, in which a man with wrinkles under his eyes and a sloppy beard spins around the screen. We zoom into your pores, zoom out those pores, which remain visible even when the camera zooms out. If you look very closely, you can almost see where the individual beard and eyebrow hair sprout from his skin.

All that skin detail is rendered with 31,000 facial triangles. My face doesn't have that many triangles, and I'm a gray-haired, real-world adult. The Coalition is so confident in this technology that they didn't even resort to my proprietary bald trick to avoid having to render more hair.
