Service for creating and viewing short videos, TikTok, owned by Beijing-based ByteDance, has reached the round mark of 1 billion monthly active users. This was posted on the company's blog.
This popularity is impressive in and of itself, but its growth rate is just as admirable. The app appeared in some markets in 2017 but did not become widely available until 2018. By comparison, it took Instagram nearly eight years to reach the billion mark since its release, and nearly six years since it was acquired by social media giant Facebook in 2012. Of course, the internet was smaller back then, and far fewer people connected to it using smartphones, but that doesn't detract from TikTok's success, especially when you consider that almost a year ago, the Trump administration threatened to ban the app unless ByteDance sold TikTok to an American buyer.
