It was one of the surprises at the Detroit Motor Show in 2017. The Volkswagen ID Buzz, a 100% electric vehicle with a capacity for up to eight occupants and autonomous driving functions that would hit the market in 2022. And now a few years later and with The new generation of the Volkswagen Multivan (T7) already presented, the brand from Wolfsburg is finally preparing its arrival, as confirmed by our spies, who have hunted this test mule under which the long-awaited electric van is hidden.

State-of-the-art electric and autonomous

Under the guise of a Volkswagen T6.1 this initial version of the future Volkswagen ID. Production Buzz has been sighted in the Austrian Alps, where it is expected to carry out much of its development, as has happened with other versions of the new generation T7. However, some of the photos that our spies have managed to take show us an interior more typical of the new generation of the Transporter / Multivan / California family. Another curious detail is that the rear wheels have drum brakes instead of ventilated discs, as is the case with the new Volkswagen ID.4.

The Volkswagen ID. Buzz was born as a tribute to the mythical Kombi –transporter– and will finally see the light of day in 2022. Specifically, it will be produced in the Hannover factory, Germany, for all the markets in which it is planned to be marketed: the United States, Europe, and China.

The Volkswagen ID Buzz will be manufactured from Hannover for all markets.

In microbus and commercial versions

Volkswagen unveiled the first features of this ID. Buzz at an event in Pebble Beach in 2017, something that was not a coincidence, since it is in California where the vehicle will have one of its main markets. It is known that there will be two versions, passenger, with the name of ID. Buzz and commercial, the ID. Buzz Cargo, and with level 3 autonomous driving functions, given that the modular platform - MEB, specific for electric vehicles that it will use allows various configurations.

The Volkswagen ID Buzz will be 100% electric and will have batteries - located on the ground in order to achieve the best possible habitability - with capacities ranging from 48 kWh to 111 kWh, which will allow a maximum autonomy that will be around 550 kilometers. The versions with a single-engine will have a power of 150 kW (203 hp) that will move the rear wheels, and that will allow it to reach a limited top speed of 160 km / h, similar to that of the ID.4 and ID.3. In any case, Volkswagen will also offer at some point a second option with double motor and all-wheel drive.

The arrival of this new Volkswagen ID. Buzz is scheduled for next year in Europe and will arrive in the United States shortly thereafter. Also a little later, in 2025, this new electric van is expected to receive advanced autonomous driving technology from Argo AI, the company that Volkswagen and Ford are jointly driving forward.
