A new study has revealed that mobile phones could greatly influence the control of future epidemics. A study by scientists at Bond University in Queensland said cell phones are contaminated with dangerous pathogens such as bacteria and viruses that negate the benefits of handwashing.
Bond University associate professor of molecular biology Dr. Lotte Tagouri said, the mobile phones surveyed in the study are completely contaminated with bacteria, viruses, fungi, and even parasites.
The study found that 98% of health care workers know mobile phones are contaminated, 52% say they use them while in the bathroom, and 57% say they have never cleaned them.
Dr. Tagouri said, biosecurity and the plans that should be put in place in airports and public facilities should take into account procedures for sterilizing mobile phones, after finding animal and plant pathogens on them.
