Why did Apple's social network Ping fail?

Millions of people use social networks on a daily basis. There is no doubt that it is a major part of the Internet today. Apple had its own social network at one point, ten years ago.

Apple's social network is called Ping. It competed directly with Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. However, this network was not successful enough, and it was not given the attention of Apple itself. This network was introduced by Steve Jobs himself. Although it was a website, it was only accessible through iTunes.

Apple social network Ping

Steve Jobs said during the announcement of the new network that it will form a mixture between Facebook and Twitter, but inside iTunes. And Jobs was right, as that social network came with a Facebook look on the one hand. On the other hand, it included elements and features inspired by Twitter.

The user was able to access Ping through iTunes with version 10.0. Where there was a section under the name Ping within the sections on the application.

The user could search for friends, celebrities, or artists and follow them or view their profiles and posts.

Reasons for the failure of Ping

Apple's social network was providing an integrated user experience. There is no doubt that it was able to compete with Twitter and Facebook, especially since the network had the same number of iTunes users in general, which were 160 million users.

However, this does not mean that all iTunes users necessarily use that social network. On the other hand, Apple has limited its network within the application, which made access to it require downloading and installing the program.

Users were not very interested in this network, and neither was the company's administrators themselves, including Tim Cook, who saw an investment in this network as a losing investment.

All of these factors led to the announcement of the network being permanently suspended and the registration of new members banned on September 30, 2012.

As is known, Google has also reached the same fate with its social network, but the difference between Google and Apple is that the former took a very long time to make its final decision to close its social network.
