Xbox will have an app for smart TVs

Although the latest generation consoles have greatly improved the way in which video games are enjoyed, with advantages such as better graphics, more resolution, and frames per second. Companies have found that there is a growing market of people who want to play some of the most popular titles without the need for a console. In this sense, Xbox is promoting a subscription service with a wide catalog that can be accessed from various devices and will soon have an app for smart TVs.

Microsoft announced that it is working with television manufacturers to make an Xbox app available on those devices soon. That means the company plans to bring its Xbox Game Pass service to smart TVs through its xCloud streaming technology, which will open up more options for accessing Xbox games.

According to what is known so far, the alternative will be available as an application on televisions and with Microsoft's exclusive streaming device. We're working with global TV makers to integrate the Game Pass experience directly into Internet-connected TVs, so all that will be needed to play is a controller, said Liz Hamren, director of gaming experiences and platforms at Microsoft.

However, Microsoft has not announced exactly when this Xbox application will be available on televisions, nor which manufacturers will include it on their devices. While it's worth remembering that Xbox boss Phil Spencer suggested late last year that they would launch an Xbox app for televisions, back then he said he expected to see that in the next 12 months, so the app could arrive before the end of 2021.

Spencer also hinted at the development of an Xbox streaming device last year. Regarding this team, Microsoft has stated that it will appear soon. "We're also developing standalone streaming devices that you can connect to a TV or monitor, so if you have a good internet connection, you can stream your Xbox experience," Hamren revealed.

But, like the TV app plans, Microsoft didn't provide any details on the release date or pricing of its own Xbox streaming devices. They haven't even given an idea of what they will look like.

What we do know is that these plans are part of Microsoft's strategy to achieve a greater reach of its Xbox Game Pass subscription service, which is currently only available for Xbox smartphones and consoles.

Thanks to the publication of the content of an Xbox panel, which is supposed to be presented at E3, it was announced that Microsoft executives are already working on the next generation of their console.

In the talk, company executives discuss their plans for what is now known as the Xbox ecosystem, that is, everything that involves consoles, the Game Pass subscription, and the transmission of games. But something that has caught the attention of the statements is that Liz Hamren said: “No one should think that we are slowing down the engineering of our center console. In fact, we are speeding it up. We are already hard at work on new platforms and hardware, some of which will not be released for years.

The reality is that the statement does not give any clue as to what to expect. Some speculate that it will be a "mid-generation" update like the Xbox One X, although it could also be a completely new console. We will have to wait to see what technology they surprise us with.
