Mercedes-Maybach Concept EQS: Welcome to the electric age

CAR AND DRIVER Media spies have been offering them some very interesting images of a model that will mark a turning point within Mercedes-Maybach as we are talking about the brand's first 100% electric car, an SUV that has just been anticipated on the occasion of the IAA Mobility of Munich with an interesting prototype called the Mercedes-Maybach Concept EQS.

Sneak Peek of Maybach's First 100% Electric SUV

Given that we are facing a vehicle close to series production it is convenient to look at its lines since these will not be very different from the SUV that we will see next year. The design language Seamless Design stands out for smooth transitions with no breakdown, edges, or discontinuities. At the front, a large grille features different vertical chrome elements, stylized headlights, and a bonnet with a marked central rib that culminates in the brand's insignia.

In the profile we look at its aerodynamically optimized side steps, its 24-inch wheels, flush door handles, and a lightly extended C-pillar that is in line with a descending roofline culminating in an integrated spoiler. Already at the rear, the rear lights in the form of a helical light band and a bumper with a chrome element that runs through it stand out. In addition, the Concept EQS has automatic comfort doors, which open by themselves when the driver approaches.

Britta Seeger, Member of the Daimler and Mercedes Board of Directors, Head of Sales said, many of the Mercedes-Maybach brand customers live and work with a high degree of networking, and they place very high demands on our digital solutions. At the same time, they expect their favorite brand to commit to sustainable values like them, and to take responsibility for the environment. The Mercedes-Maybach EQS Concept fully meets all these expectations and embodies sublime luxury in a more advanced expression than ever. The all-electric powertrain enables sustainable mobility and offers passengers an unprecedented level of serenity and relaxation on board.

With regard to the interior, the floating center console stands out, extended from the driving position to the rear seats. This has different inserts for placing vases and a large surface below that can be used to store numerous utensils or for individual equipment options such as folding tables or a refrigerator compartment. Like a good Maybach, the prominence falls on First-Class rear seats with two generously sized individual seats that are accompanied by the High-End entertainment system and high-quality sideboard-shaped armrests. All of this is complemented by trim elements in glossy white lacquer and materials in ocean blue.

The MBUX Hyperscreen system is present, with Maybach-specific content and display styles.

Maximum smooth running

The Mercedes-Maybach Concept EQS represents the transformation of the traditional luxury brand, towards a more advanced and exclusively electric future. Like any other Maybach model, the concept car is an expression of Sophisticated Luxury in all its facets. The close-to-series-production experimental prototype demonstrates how ultra-modern electric drive technology and an advanced infotainment concept, including the spectacular MBUX Hyperscreen, can be combined with typical Maybach craftsmanship and an exquisite level of equipment. This combination of details, perfected with passion and expertise, creates a unique experience of automotive luxury. With the future series SUV with exclusively electric drive, we underline our desire for leadership in the luxury segment, Philipp Schiemer, Head of Top End Vehicle Group at Mercedes and Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG.

Given that we are facing a prototype, many technical details of the vehicle have not transpired, except that it uses a modular platform for Mercedes high-end and luxury electric vehicles, the same that will mount the EQS SUV. The brand says that the electric powertrain here also ensures maximum smoothness of movement and makes possible a new level of serenity and relaxation in the cabin. The estimated range of the Concept EQS is about 600 kilometers according to the WLTP protocol.
