Apple executive responds to annoying iOS 16 copy-paste permission popup

Apple has responded to user complaints about annoying pop-ups in iOS 16. If an application wants to access the clipboard to paste text, images, etc., it needs to ask for permission from the user. New pop-up prompts were added to iOS 16 as a new privacy measure to protect users, requiring apps to request permission to access the clipboard, which may contain sensitive data. However, when users install iOS 16, the prompt has become an annoyance as it keeps asking for permission whenever they want to paste something into the app.

With user dissatisfaction with the behavior running high, Apple finally responded by saying the constant pop-ups weren't how the feature was intended to work. Netizen Kieran sent an email to Craig Federighi and Tim Cook complaining about constant pop-ups and arguing that Apple treats clipboard access the same way iOS treats third-party apps' access to location, camera, microphone, etc. Same.

Apple senior manager Ron Huang joined the email discussion, saying the pop-up should not appear every time a user tries to paste. "This is definitely not expected behavior, and we'll get to the bottom of it," Ron Huang added, adding that this behavior has not been seen inside Apple, but that many users have experienced this frequent pop-up behavior.

Responding to a suggestion to "allow each app to add clipboard access in the Settings app," Ron Huang said this would be a "nice improvement," adding that Apple "certainly needs to fix and make apps like Mail The program works fine without frequent permission requests, but it's still helpful for apps that users want to share data with (even if they don't launch it)." "Stay tuned," he added.

Ron Huang is listed as one of several inventors of this feature in a patent application for "Authenticated Interface Element Interaction" dated January 29, 2021. The clipboard access bug is one of several features Apple needs to fix in the iOS 16 update, including reports of excessive battery drain and an issue with iPhone 14 Pro models freezing after transferring data from older iPhones. Now, Apple is already testing the new version of iOS 16.1 Beta.
