Boeing and Airbus deliveries lag as airlines face plane shortages

In addition to needing more pilots and parts, airlines are facing a new dilemma-a shortage of new aircraft. Boeing and Airbus are months behind schedule in delivering new single-aisle planes typically used for domestic U.S. flights or other short-haul routes, airline executives and industry officials said, limiting airlines from adding more flights to meet the needs of the recovery and the ability to plan flight schedules.

"It made it difficult for our team to plan," Southwest Airlines Chairman Gary Kelly said at an aviation industry event in Washington in September.

A Boeing spokesman said the company continues to work closely with suppliers to meet delivery commitments to customers.

In addition, Airbus declined to comment but referred to recent statements by executives that they were addressing supply chain difficulties . The company noted that it expects to be a challenge to meet delivery targets this year.
