CDPR will end the update of The Witcher: Gwent and the team will move to other projects

CDPR will end its support for The Witcher: The Cardinal Game of Gwent. Only a small number of staff will be retained to maintain the operation of the game, and the rest of the developers will be transferred to other projects. The Witcher: Gwent will be updated with new cards and e-sports competitions in 2023, so the update will end in 2024. Specifically, the game will release 72 cards in three expansion packs in April, July, and September 2023, as well as two eSports tournaments, before transitioning to a community-focused maintenance phase. Balance changes are made through community voting.

CDPR Senior Manager Paweł Burza responded to IGN,

When it comes to The Witcher: The Cardinal Game and its community, I would like to say that the game is not over yet and the game will see another great year (and more).

The Witcher: The Gwent Card was first released in a closed beta version in October 2016, and celebrated the fifth anniversary of the public beta in May 2022. It is a card derived from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt card game.

CDPR is currently busy with multiple projects, including the next-generation Witcher series trilogy, the first plot expansion of Cyberpunk 2077, the remake of the first generation of Witcher...etc., and even Cyberpunk and the sequel to 2077 is the next. Freeing up manpower to meet the development of large-scale projects may avoid the next "Cyberpunk 2077" release nightmare.
