PepsiCo confirms Tesla Semi truck deliveries will begin in December

PepsiCo confirmed on Friday that it will begin accepting Tesla's semi-cards on December 1, becoming the first company to receive orders for the long-delayed electric car.

PepsiCo said in a statement that the trucks will be used at the Frito-Lay plant in Modesto, Calif., and the PepsiCo beverage plant in Sacramento. PepsiCo, which has been working to reduce fuel costs and emissions, ordered 100 trucks in 2017, and it has only been five years since deliveries began.

U.S. companies have pledged to take action to reduce their environmental impact. Transportation accounts for about 10 percent of PepsiCo's greenhouse gas emissions, according to PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta.

In addition to PepsiCo, others including United Parcel Service, Walmart, JB Hunt Transport Services and food service distributor Sysco Corp have preordered Tesla's Semi trucks.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on Twitter late Thursday the start of production of the Semi trucks, saying the vehicles have a range of 500 miles (805 kilometers) and are "very fun to drive.

Musk initially said the trucks would go into production in 2019, but have been delayed for several years due to parts shortages and other reasons.
