Russia's space agency wants to continue ISS membership beyond 2024

According to a Roscosmos spokesman, Russia's space agency is in talks with Moscow about extending its participation in the International Space Station until 2024.

According to Sergei Krikalev, Russia's chief of human space flight projects, Roscosmos has begun discussions with our government about extending our participation in the ISS program and hopes to continue next year.

As relations between Russia and the West deteriorated due to the Ukraine conflict, Roscosmos head Yuri Borissov said over the summer that Russia will depart the ISS after 2024 and seek to build its own space station. He hasn't established a precise deadline for this proposal.

Krikalev stated that establishing a new station will take time, therefore we will most likely continue to travel until we have new infrastructure. The announcement was made during a NASA news conference ahead of Wednesday's launch of a SpaceX rocket carrying a Russian cosmonaut, two American astronauts, and a Japanese astronaut to the International Space Station.

The United States, Russia, Europe, Canada, and Japan are now committed to operating the orbiting laboratory through 2024, while US officials have suggested that they intend to continue until 2030. The space industry is one of the few areas of collaboration that has weathered the severe tensions that have existed between the United States and Russia since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February.
