Title: Authy to Discontinue Desktop App in August 2024, Shifts Focus to Mobile Devices

Authy, the popular two-factor authentication (2FA) app, has announced the discontinuation of its desktop application. According to an updated support page discovered by Bleeping Computer, Authy users on Windows, macOS, and Linux will no longer have access to the desktop app after August 2024.

Similar to other 2FA apps such as Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator, Authy generates a unique code every 30 seconds, enhancing account security. Authy has been a standout choice for users who preferred a desktop solution, allowing them to sign in to their accounts without relying on a mobile device.

However, with the upcoming change, Authy is urging users to transition to the mobile version of the app. Mac users with M1 or M2 silicon can still access the iOS version on their devices. For others, the mobile version can be synchronized with the desktop app. Authy emphasizes that users contemplating a switch to another 2FA app should be aware that it lacks an export feature. Consequently, users will need to disable 2FA on all connected accounts before linking them with a new app.

Twilio, the parent company of Authy, is not only retiring the desktop app but is also relocating Authy's customer support hub to the help center on Twilio’s website, effective January 15th, 2024.

In a statement, Twilio explained its decision to sunset the desktop app, citing a strategic move to "streamline our focus and provide more value on existing product solutions for which we see increasing demand." The move follows a 5 percent reduction in workforce in December 2023, and more recently, the company announced a change in leadership with the appointment of a new CEO.

As Authy bids farewell to its desktop application, users are encouraged to adapt to the evolving landscape of 2FA solutions, ensuring the continued security of their online accounts.
