Users are not interested in certain types of videos on YouTube

Mozilla has a new study that found that even if users are not interested in certain types of videos on YouTube, but similar related videos will appear.

Using video recommendation data from more than 20,000 YouTube users, Mozilla researchers found that buttons such as "Not Interested," "Dislike," "Stop Recommending Channel," and "Remove from Watch History" were largely ineffective in preventing similar content from being recommended. Reports show that even under the best of circumstances, these buttons still pass more than half of the recommendations, similar to what users say they're not interested in. But badly, the buttons do little to block similar videos.

According to the researchers: "YouTube should respect user experience feedback."

But YouTube spokeswoman Elena Hernandez said that was intentional, as the platform doesn't try to block content related to a topic.

The "Not Interested" option removes a specific video, while the "Don't recommend channel" button prevents the channel from being recommended in the future, Hernandez said.

YouTube said it won't stop recommending everything related to a topic, opinion, or speaker.
